Deliverance

Deliverance is a novel written by James Dickey in 1970.

The novel was made into a film in 1972, directed by John Boorman with the screenplay adapted by Dickey. It stars Jon Voigt, Burt Reynolds, Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox. Dickey also has a small role as a sheriff.

The motion picture was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Picture. This film became notorious both for the instrumental "Dueling Banjos" theme and its stark depiction of rural Southerners.

Spoiler warning: Plot or ending details follow.

The story details a canoe trip down the Cahulawassee River in Northern Georgia by four middle class southerners. The two canoes are briefly separated and the occupants of one canoe encounter a pair of men in the woods. At gunpoint one of the vacationers, Bobby Trippe, is raped (In the movie, he is ordered to "squeal like a pig"). They are rescued, but pursued for the rest of the journey, and one of four is killed.
