Black Box Recorder debuted in 1998 with England Made Me, a collection of lyrically mature pop tunes whose audience is anyone who has lived past their 13th birthday.
They occupy a space in the British pop landscape formerly rented to Morrissey, languishing as they do in misery. Their songs evoke pangs of despair and the worst kind of nostalgia, with lyrics like "life is unfair, kill yourself or get over it" and "at last he summons up the courage, phones her and discovers someone else has asked her first and she said yes".
The cynical and biting analysis of human emotion, as delivered by the velvety, inviting voice of Nixey, feels like picking up a cute fluffy bunny, only to have it bite out your heart.
Black Box Recorder are Sarah Nixey, Lester Haines (formerly of the Auteurs) and John Moore.
