Charlie Gehringer



         



Charles Leonard Gehringer aka the Mechanical Man (May 11, 1903 - January 21, 1993) was an American second baseman in Major League Baseball.

Gehringer played 19 big league seasons from 1924-1942, all with the Detroit Tigers. Gehringer played 2323 career games. He had 2839 hits. 574 doubles, 184 home runs, and 1427 runs batted in. His career batting average was .320. Gehringer was also a threat on the bases with 181 career steals. He is considered by most to be one of the greatest second basemen of all time. He won the American League batting title with a .371 average in 1937. Gehringer was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1949.

After his retirement, Gehringer served as a club executive (1951-59) and as a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame Committee on Veterans (1953-90).
