CONCACAF Gold Cup

The CONCACAF Gold Cup is the main national football competition of the CONCACAF nations. The participating nations are from North and Central America and from the Caribbean islands. In addition, up to three entrants from the other world football confederations are invited to pay in the final tournament. From 1963 to 1989 the tournament was called CONCACAF Championship.

It was first held in 1963 and replaced the CCCF Championship (1941-61), which was for Central American and Caribbean nations only. In recent years the Gold Cup has also become a qualifying event for the Copa América, with the winner and runner-up being invited to play in the more prestigious CONMEBOL championship.

Not surprisingly, Mexico have dominated the event with seven wins, although wins by Canada and the United States in the current decade may signal a new era of parity for the continental football scene.
