Don Nickles



         


Donald Lee Nickles (born December 6 1948) is a United States Senator from Oklahoma and a member of the Republican Party. He was born and educated in Oklahoma. He served in the United States National Guard from 1970 until 1976. He then became a successful businessman, but soon entered politics. Nickles was a state senator from 1978 until his election to the United States Senate at the unusually young age of 32 in 1980. Nickles was reelected in 1986, 1992 and 1998. He has been heavily involved in various Republican policy committees. On October 7, 2003, Nickles announced he will not seek reelection in 2004 and will retire after more than 20 years in office. Democrat Brad Carson and Republican Tom Coburn are vying to take his place in the Senate.
