Nicknamed "Mex", Keith Hernandez was an American professional baseball player, playing for the St. Louis Cardinals (1974-1983), New York Mets (1983-1989), and Cleveland Indians (1990). Hernandez was born on October 20, 1953, in San Francisco, CA. His family moved to the suburbs, down the Peninsula, and he went to Capuchino High School. He attended San Mateo Junior College aka College of San Mateo. He was drafted by the Cardinals in the 42nd round of the 1971 draft, as the 776th overall player drafted.
Known for his outstanding defense, he won 11 consecutive Gold Glove awards (1978-1988) at first base. In 1979, he led the league with a .344 batting average, 48 doubles, and 116 runs scored, and went on to share the NL MVP award that year with Willie Stargell.
Shortly after leading the Mets to a World Series win in 1986, he was named the first team captain in franchise history.
For the first two years of his career, he wore uniform number 18. In 1976, he switched to number 37. Upon being traded to the Mets, he switched to uniform number 17, which he wore for the remainder of his career as a Met, as well as the Indians.
Jun 15, 1983 : Traded to New York Mets for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey.
Dec 07, 1989 : Signed with Cleveland Indians as a free agent.
Hernandez once guest starred as himself in a two-part episode of Seinfeld.
Hernandez holds the career record for game winning RBI, a statistic that was only official from 1980-1988. He holds the career record with 129, and the season record with 24, set in 1985.
Hernandez was elected to the All-Star game five times, in 1979, 1980, 1984, 1986, and 1987.
Hernandez was a member of two World Series winners - the 1982 Cardinals and 1986 Mets.
Hernandez won 11 straight Gold Gloves at first base, from 1978 to 1988.
