Manny Ramirez
Manuel Arístides "Manny" Ramírez (born May 30, 1972 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is an outfielder in Major League Baseball with the Boston Red Sox. He was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 1st round of the 1991 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft. He signed with Boston as a free agent after the 2000 season.
Ramírez is a career .317 hitter with 347 home runs and 1140 RBI in 11 seasons (1993-2003). He is considered one of the best right-handed hitters in the American League both for average and for power.
Ramírez, while a proficient hitter, has been prone to mental lapses, such as the one he had in a game with Cleveland when, thinking a ball had been gone out of play, neglected to field it, resulting in extra bases for the batter.
Ramírez weathered a controversy last year in Boston when he missed several games with pharyngitis. Many members of the Boston sports media and many Red Sox fans criticized the outfielder, saying he should have played despite the ailment. When it was learned that he had been seen in a hotel lobby with close friend, New York Yankees infielder Enrique Wilson, the controversy grew, causing Red Sox manager Grady Little to bench Ramírez for one game. But Manny has even silenced his critics by continuing to hit long homers and to create big chances for his fellow teammate David Ortiz.
